History of the Suburb of Asquith

On the 1st of November 1915 Asquith Railway Station was opened, named after Herbert Henry Asquith the Earl of Exford and Asquith, Prime Minister of England at the time.

The station was opened for the sale of land subdivided by R. Halloran and Co.. The land was slow to sell as it was not till 1924 that an agency Post Office was opened. The school was not opened till 1930.

The European refugees stationed at Hornsby in the late 1940s for their compulsory two years of Government work, worked for the Water Board laying the water on to Asquith.

The laid on water made the land more attractive to potential home builders but it remained unsewered till the early 1970s. As this unsewered land north of Hornsby was cheaper than elsewhere it attracted many owner builders in the 1950s.

Owner builders were a band of hardworking families that bought a block of land, built a fibro garage on it at weekends, moved into the garage, often with a young family then proceeded to build their own house at the weekend as they would afford the material. This often took several years.

There were so many owner builders across Sydney that books of plans and instructions were published detailing how to build a house.

As the land was cheap the Housing Commission also built several houses there.

The outstanding features of Asquith are the Golf Course and the Railway Carriage Sheds.
